Abstract: Interactive effects of reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis, and root-rot fungus,Macrophomins phaseolina, on lentil were examined. Both the pathogens caused significant reductions in length and weight of shoot and root, number of pods and root nodulation when inoculated singly. Simultaneous, as well as  sequential inoculations of the pathogens, caused further reduction in the above parameters. In combined  inoculations, however, the reduction was more pronounced in the simultaneous inoculation than in the sequential inoculation. The presence of the fungus had an antagonistic effect on the multiplication of the nematode, but the severity of root-rot increased in presence of the nematode.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: STUDIES ON ROOT-KNOT NEMATODES IN WHEAT

Abstract: Experiments on the effect of root-knot nematodes in wheat were conducted to evaluate i) inoculum potential in relation to growth and development of wheat plants, ii) effect of root-knot nematodes infection on biochemical changes and iii) histopathology. Inoculum level of 1,000 nematodes/plant or greater were detrimental to the growth and development of wheat variety Sonalika. Due to root-knot infection, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase increased significantly but total phenol contents did not change. Histopathological studies of infected tissues indicated that nematode larvae entered intracellularly to stellar region of root. Cells surrounding  nematode head increased in size and number, finally forming galls wherein nematode reproduced by laying eggs in gelatinous matrix. Severe damage to the vascular tissues disrupted the continuity of xylem tissues. Cells surrounding the nematode feeding site were darkened and thickened compared to healthy tissues.</summary>

The nematode caused extensive damage to epidermis, cortical, endodermal and the vascular tissues. Severe vascular alterations were caused by the nematode giant cells in the stele. Karyokinesis without cytokinesis was the mechanism of giant cell formation.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: WEED AND CROP HOSTS OF ROOT-KNOT NEMATODE, MELOIDOGYNE JAVANICA (TREUB, 1885) CHITWOOD, 1949 IN NORTH WEST NIGERIA

Abstract: Five weed species, including Ageratum conyzoides, Eclipta alba, Ipomea aquatica, Polygonum senegalense and Sesbania leptocarpa, were hosts of Meloidogyne javanica in the fadama farmlands along Rima river in Sokoto. All the vegetable crops grown in the local environment were infected by the nematode. Wheat was attacked both in the field and under screen house conditions. Rice, millet and sorghum were not attacked by the nematode. Under screen house conditions cowpea cultivar Ife Brown, Kano 1996, TVX 3236 and IAR 335 were attacked by M. javanica. All the 4 cultivars had significant reduction in number of nodules. Symptoms of infection include yellowing of leaves and heavy gallings of the roots.</summary>
