Abstract: Currently probiotics are considered as an emerging therapeutic strategy in the treatment of many liver&#xD;
disorders. The use of probiotics beyond infection of intestinal flora is a very helpful approach. The optimistic effect of probiotics has been observed in treating the hepatic cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, viral hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver and alcoholic liver disease. The characterize mechanisms of probiotics are still unknown but may involve in, maintaining a microbial barrier against potential pathogens, reducing the production of bacterial toxins, modulating the immune system, intestinal permeability, and the inflammatory response. Its safety issues, effectiveness, food supplements as its source are still to be studied. However, studies revealed that probiotic therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma and in portal hypertension are still weak. Larger clinical studies are required before probiotics can be recommended as a treatment modality in liver diseases.</description>

Abstract: Hydrothermal spring isolate Bacillus megaterium KIBGE-IB31was utilized to produce dextranase. Enzyme&#xD;
was partially purified up to 11.8 fold after dialysis. Different metals ions were tested to explore their behavior with dextranase. It was noticed that cobalt (Co+2), copper (Cu+2), magnesium (Mg+2), manganese (Mn+2), nickle (Ni+2) and zinc (Zn+2) act as activator whilst potassium (K+ ), sodium (Na+ ), barium (Ba+2), calcium  (Ca+2), mercury (Hg+2), vanadium (V+2), aluminum (Al+3) and ferric (Fe+3) ions display inhibitory action.</description>

Abstract: Chest fungal infection is a rarely seen lethal disease with rapid progression. Sufficient residence time of&#xD;
antifungal agent with therapeutic concentration in the chest is an essential point during anti-infection therapy, which is hard to achieve via conventional systemic drug delivery. We here by describe a case of successful treatment of fungal Chest infection via local pleural lavage. A 59 years old male was hospitalized due to chest pain. X-ray of chest and bacterial culture of thoracic drainage fluid and blood indicated severe chest infection of Candida albicans. The patient was initially administered intravenously with amphotericin B (25mg/day). However, the symptoms were not significantly improved after 5 days of treatment. Then one-hour pleural lavage of 5mg amphotericin B in volume of 50ml 5% glucose solution was added once daily. On day 12, bacterial cultures showed negative, and chest X-ray exhibited apparent decrease of shadow area, also other examinations such as body temperature and white blood cell count suggested significant improvement of infection. The therapeutic strategy of amphotericin B was maintained until two consecutive bacterial cultures were negative, then was switched back to intravenous drip alone for another one month found. No significant adverse effects were observed during the treatment. In conclusion, this case demonstrates a new local pleural lavage method of amphotericin B for chest fungal infection, which may provide a reference for the treatment of such cases.</description>

Abstract: Avian influenza or bird flu is a common problem of domestic and wild birds. Some of its strains are able to&#xD;
cross the species barrier and cause infection in various members of class Mammalia. In view of relatively lesser efficacy of vaccines, antiviral therapies remain the only choice for the sustenance of mammals acquiring this highly devastating infection. This study is based on the evaluation of antiviral potential of methanol extracts of eleven selected Cholistani plants. The methanol extracts were prepared by using dried plants material followed by concentrating in a rotary evaporator and finally air dried before dissolving in nanopure water. The suspension was filter sterilized and subjected to in ovo antiviral assays. The allantoic fluids were harvested and haemagglutinin (HA) titers were determined. Among the eleven plants evaluated all methanol extracts were found effective against AIV H9N2 except S. baryosma extract. The medicinal plants O. compressa, N. procumbens, and S. surattense were found to be more effective than others and they retained HA titers at 0 after challenge. The next in order were extracts of O. esculentum, H. salicornicum and S. fruticosa which kept HA titers at 4, 8 and 16 respectively. The extracts of H. recurvum, P. antidotale, S. icolados and A. aspera&#xD;
were found less effective than above mentioned plant extracts and they kept the HA titers at 32, 64, 128 and 256 respectively. These results led us to conclude that the medicinal plants of Cholistan region are a rich source of antiviral agent(s) against AIV H9N2 and could be a source of cost effective alternate therapeutics.</description>
