Identity and linkage of the costata mutant on pisum

Title: Identity and linkage of the costata mutant on pisum
Authors: Ch. R. Arain
Abstract: Six induced mutants of the costata type are described. I was found that three mutants were allelic. Linkage analysis confirmed the localization of the costata gene lum in chromosome 4.

Levels of proline , glycinebetaine , potassium and magnesium in the germinating wheat seeds.

Title: Levels of proline , glycinebetaine , potassium and magnesium in the germinating wheat seeds.
Authors: NAZIR AHMAD
Abstract: Changes in levels of praline, glycinebetaine, potassium and magnesium in different tissues of germinating wheat seeds were studied. The tissues of the quiescent wheat grains contained proline, glycinebetaine and inorganic ions. During germination the proline levels increased many fold. The aleurone tissue and the embryo contained large quantities of glycinebetaine and glycinebetaine levels observed in the embryo/seedling arose mainly from the aleurone tissue during germination. The comparative contribution of glycinebetaine and proline to tissue osmotic potential is discussed.

Title: ISOLATION AND YIELD OF PROTOPLASTS FROM DIFFERENT TISSUES OF TRITICUM AESTIVUM IN STERILE CULTURE
Authors: KHALIDA KHATOON
Abstract: Protoplasts from leaves, roots excised from young seedlings and calli induced from roots of seeds have been isolated with a digestion mixture containing 2.5% Macerozyme, 2.5% cellulase Onozuka-R40 and i% hemicellulase in 0.7% mannitol at pH 5.6 after 6 h incubation. Young leaves yielded highest amount of protoplasts and appeared to be a good source of plant material.

Title: Growth of azadirachta indica and melia azedarach at coastal sand using highly saline water for irrigation.
Authors: RAFIQ AHMAD; D. KHAN; SHOAlB ISMAIL
Abstract: azadirachta indica and melia azedarach were grown at coastal sand using 10-30% dilutions of saline water; (EC1W : 4.5-14.0 dS.m-1). For irrigation . height and diameter of the plants decreased as compared to control plants which were irrigated with non-saline water. Plants irrigated with saline water showed an increase in moisture content and decrease in chlorophyll , sugar and protein content associated with an increase in proline. Under saline water irrigation M. azedarach showed rapid growth than A. indica . these plants could, therefore, be grown for afforestation at sandy deserts using underground saline water for irrigation where normal non-saline water is not available.
