Abstract: The green alga Bryopsis pennata Lamouroux, collected from the coast of Karachi, has been investigated for its sterol and fatty acid compositions. Four sterols and 19 fatty acids have been isolated from methanolic extract of this alga and identified by (1)H-NMR, El- &amp; GC-MS techniques. The sterol having cholesta skeleton was found as major constituent (78.12%), while other three with ergosta skeleton occurred in traces (5-9%). Seven saturated fatty acids were present in greater quantity (72.58%) than 12 unsaturated ones (27.41%). The latter included 7 monoenoic, 2 dicnoic, 2 trienoic and 1 pentaenoic adds. Tricosanoic acid was found in the highest amount (30.24%), cyclopentenyl undecanoic and heneicosapentaenoic acids were the unique and rare fatty acids detected.</description>

Abstract: The present studies were conducted to detect and identify the microorganism from the urine of pregnant women having urinary tract infection. The antibiotic susceptibility of these isolated microorganisms was also determined. The microorganisms found responsible for the infection were bacteria, fungi, yeast and protozoa. Among the bacteria two were identified as Gram-positive cocci i.e. Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis, the remaining two were Gram-negative bacilli which were Escherichia coil and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The fungus was identified as AspelEillus niger and the yeast like fungus Candida albican. The only protozoan found in some of the urine samples was Trichomonas vaginalis. These isolated and identified microorganisms were more susceptible to Norfloxacin, Velosef, Minocin, Nitrofurantoin, Malidixic acid and Metronidazole whereas antibiotics Penbritin and Cefaloridine were least effective against these microorganisms.</description>

Abstract: Eugenia Jambolana (Syzigium Cumini) locally known as Jaman, is being used in the indigenous Medicinal system for treatments of various ailments including some related to nutrition. No study appears to have been made previously regarding the composition of these native varieties produced in Northern Pakistan. Two varieties of fruits have been analyzed for physico chemical characteristics and their values compared. The findings indicate that both varieties contain adequate amount of nutrients and minerals; in general, variety I being richer in the former and II in the latter.</description>

Abstract: Norgaman has been examined by anodic rotating disc electrode voltammetry in buffered media over the range of pH from 0-11.5. The best medium is 0.1 mol 1(-1) sulphuric acid in which the anodic wave is well defined at lower rotation speeds. The compound does not show obedience to the Levich relationship at platinum and gold electrodes. Rapid determination of the compound is not possible due to the adsorption of the oxidation product. Electrode mechanism for the reaction has been elucidated.</description>
