Abstract: In the three years of the project, from 1.1.1986 to 31.12.1988, the following plants belonging to the family Capparidaceae were investigated for their chemical constituents. a) Cadaba far1nosa Forssk. b) Capparis decidua CForssk.) Edgew. c) Cleome brachycarpa Vahl ex DC. d) Crataeva adansonii DC. All of these plants possess medicinal properties. From '! ,#' Cadaba farinosa csyn. C.fruticosa), three new spermidine alkaloids, named as cadabicine, cadabicine and , cadabicine methyl ether were isolated. The structure of cadab1cine was determined by means of spectroscopic techniques as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure of cadabicine diacetate was determined by means of spectroscopic studies and comparision with synthetic product obtained from acetylation of cadabicine. Similarly the structure of cactabicine methyl ether was established by means of spectral data and confirmed by its total synthesis. Alongwith sperm1ctine alkaloids a sesquiterpene cadabicilone was also isolated from the same plant and its structure was proved by means of spectroscopic techniques including 2D-NMR. -2- From kaloids the plant Capparis decidua, six new spermidine pparisine, capparisinine, isocodonocarpine and N-acetyl N-acetylnamed as capparidisine, capparisine, ocodonocarpine were isolated. All these alkaloids ructurelly related to cadabicine. The structures of all kaloid were determined by means of spectral data. these The plant Cleome brachycarpa does not contain alkaloids but was possible to isolate from it three new triterpenoids of mmarane series named by us as brachycarpone, deacetoxyachycarpone and cleocarpone. The structures of these compounds ve been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic as well as emical methods, while structure of brachycarpone was confirmed X-ray crystallographic technqiues. From Crataeva adansonii, four alkaloids cadabic1ne, jabicine diacetate, cadabic1ne methyl ether and cappar1sine re identified which have been already isolated from Cadaba ?1nosa and Cappar1s decidua. Progress in Ist year of the pro1ect: Isolation and structure determination of 1) cadabicine from Cadaba farinosa and Crataeva adanson1i 2) capparidisine from Capparis decidua 3) brachycarpone from Cleome brachycarpa -3- Progress i.n. 2nd year of the project: Isolation and structure determination of 1) cadabicine diacetate from Cadaba farinosa and Crataeva adansonii 2) cappirisine from Capparis decidua 3) N-acetyl cappirisine from Cappiris decidua 4) cleocarpone from Cleome brachycarpa 5) deacetoxy brachycarpone from Cleome brachycarpa Progress in. 3rd year of the porject: Isolation and structure determination of 1) cadabicine methyl ether from Cadaba farinosa and Crataeva adansonii 2) cadabicilone from Cadaba farinosa 3) cappirisinine from Capparis decidua 4) Isocodonocarpine from Capparis decidua 5) N-acetylcodonocarpine from Capparis decidua 6) Total synthesis of cadabicine methyl ether
