History of exploration in the area upto 1959 has been given. The findings of 1959 - to date are highlighted alongwith the list of workers who contributed in the 2nd phase alongwith a list of authors of publications. Unsolved research problems have been listed of which problems that fall within the objectives of' this project have been picked up. Time Table for the 3 years project period has tentatively been outlined. Tentative distribution of independent work load of' various participants in the project is given to enable them later to develop the data into research degrees. The progress of work during two years of' project period is given. It includes reconnaissance of 51 localities, detailed section measurements of 17 sections and their regional correlations. Some advances have been made during reconnaissance and section measurements. These are (i) the facies variations in various formations; (ii) thickening and thinning of units; (iii) impact of unconformities over the underlying sequences; (iv) first report of the presence by certain units in some areas; (v) gradual dying down of at least one unconformity and a tentative identification of 16 types of economic rocks and minerals at 21 different geological horizons. One publication on analysis of a couple of samples has already been published. Three publications that have gone to the press are (a) proposal of a new formation; (b) Facies variations in Hangu Formation; (c) micro facies studies of Samana Suk Formation, Geology and tectonics of active land-slides in two settled areas is in progress and is expected to go to press by the end of the yearen_US
