Abstract: The 4,1-Banzoxazepine diones constitute an important class of biologically active heterocyclic compounds. They show biological activites e.g diuretic, chloretic, CNS depressant, antihistaminic and anti-inflammatory. The aim of this project was to synthesize some 4, 1- Benzoxazepine diones, establish their structures by modern spectroscopic methods like IR, UV, NMR and MS etc. The study of their chemical and biological activities was the other main objective of the project. The project was started with the above mentioned research programme in mind on June 20, 1995. About twentytwo compounds were synthesized at all, while ten of them are new compounds. These compounds were purified by thick layer chromatography or column chromatography. Their structures were established on the basis of the above mentioned spectroscopic methods using the scheme-I. Antibacterial studies of some of these compounds were carried out in collaboration with Dr. Safia Ahmad of Department of Biology, Quaid-I-Azam University, Islamabad, The results are presented in the table-VI Some of the results of this project have been presented at the 8th National Chemistry Conference held at Lahore on September 2-4, 1997. This will be published in the proceedings of the Conference in due course of time. One more publication is being prepared and will be submitted to some international journal sometime in 1998. Miss Samina Alam the Research Associate has completed her M.Phil as a result of this research project.
