The objective of the project is synthesis and characterization of some liquid crystalline molecules. In first year of project some Schiff bases, Schiff base enters and benzimidazoles were synthesized and their liquid crystalline behaviour was studied. In the second year synthesis of p-alkoxy benzamides was planned. The synthetic strategy involved synthesis of tosylates of long chain alcohols followed by their condensation with 4-hydroxy benzoic acid esters to form the p-alkoxy aniline and 2- amino pyridine to form the corresponding amides. These molecules may show nematic or sematic phases depending upon their structural ordering. All these compounds were characterized partially by their physical properties. The present report describes the formation of p-alkoxy benzamides, their characterization by IR, NMR and mass spectroscopy and determination of liquid crystalline phases with the help of DSA and hot stage optical polarized microscope.en_US
