Abstract: Objective: To find the prevalence and effect of insomnia on daily performance of medical students in University of Lahore. Methodology: In this cross sectional study, 220 medical students from University of Lahore were recruited for study by convenient sampling technique. Study was conducted from June 2018 to August 2018. 220 sample size was calculated by EPI tool formula with margin of error 5% and confidence level 95%. Only medical students of University of Lahore with age group from 19-27 years were included in study and all other students were excluded from study. Those having any metabolic disorders, lactose intolerance, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and family history patients with insomnia were also excluded from the study. Baseline data and close ended questions were used. Results: Majority of students were moderately active during day time and tried to completing their tasks at night. 51.8% prevalence of insomnia was found in females. Increased prevalence of 56.4% insomnia was found in day-scholars. Age group 21-25 years showed prevalence of 75%. 59.5% students had insufficient sleep due to being engaged in various activities like 25% were using gadgets while 29% were suffering from stress and 80% had no fix timings of sleep. 85.5% boys smoked, which hinders their sleeping patterns. Conclusion: There is significant relationship between insomnia and daily performance of medical students. Most of the students had reduced sleep patterns due to stress using gadgets smoking taking drugs and no fix timings of sleep.
